Gong Xi Fi Cai

…in other words something like, wishing you to be prosperous in the new year. Happy Chinese New Year! The year of the monkey. The official date of CNY this year was last Monday, February 8. We were fortunate enough to be in Malaysia for this holiday (not to mention a long weekend last weekend!)

Last week we celebrated Chinese New Year with my colleagues at work for a traditional Chinese eight course meal. The first course- the salad- was the most fun. There is a big salad in the middle of the table, accompanied with many toppings (each meaning different things supposed to bring luck/prosperity), and everyone tosses the salad together in the air with their chopsticks! It was so fun, and got a tad bit messy. The rest of the courses were different combinations of meats (mostly fish) and veggies with lots of interesting sauces and flavors. Everybody here really likes to have fun, laugh A LOT, and to make fun of each other, so we also played several games throughout the meal.

Yesterday, our hotel put on a traditional Chinese New Year Lion Dance show. And afterward we again tossed the prosperity salad with other guests!
